James McWilliam is a composer, arranger and orchestrator based in central London. James’ professional career began at Metropolis Studios in 2000 after forging a strong working relationship with producer Andy Wright for whom he has written countless arrangements including tracks for Pavarotti, Simply Red and Jeff Beck. At a similar time Andy introduced James to David Whitaker, one of the country’s foremost film composers and arrangers. James worked as David’s assistant on a number of film scores and pop arrangements.
In 2005 James began work with the Oscar winning film composer Dario Marianelli and film composer Patrick Doyle. Working with the latter enabled James to get his first taste of orchestrating on Hollywood film scores including Harry Potter, As You Like It and Last Legion. James has also written a number of arrangements for Warner Entertainment, Universal Music and Endemol TV.
Recent and current work includes … Composing original scores for features ‘The Patrol’ (Raindance 2013 ‘Film of the festival/AFG/Soda) ‘Born of War’ (Lionsgate/Grindstone) and ‘Exorcist Diaries’ (Ipcress), original music for ‘Don’t Look Down’ and ‘Scrappers’ (C4/Firecracker Films/Doc), orchestrating on feature films ‘Dad’s Army’ (Composer – Charlie Mole/DJ Films/Universal Pictures), Les Vacances Du Petit Nicolas'(Composer – Eric Neveux/Fidélité Films/Wild Bunch), ‘The Book Of Life’ (Composer – Gustavo Santaolalla/20th Century Fox Animation), ‘Mortdecai’ (Composers – Mark Ronson & Geoff Zanelli/Mad Chance/OddLot/Lionsgate), ‘A Promise’ (Composer – Gabriel Yared/Fidélité Films/Scope Pictures), ‘Two Men In Town’ (Composer – Eric Neveux/Artists & Co/Tessalit Productions). In TV James during the last 12 months James has provided orchestrations on ‘Mapp & Lucia’ (Composer – Kevin Sargent/BBC) and the third series of ‘Borgia’ (Composer – Eric Neveux/Canal Plus/Atlantique) and in pop he has orchestrated/conducted on forthcoming releases by Mick Hucknall, Ben Montague and Miel.
James has an MA in Composition from Goldsmiths College and a BA from Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts.
